LONDON–TUSCANY by car 30-05-06

european road trip

Europe is a very beautiful place. The first time I set foot on the continent was during a honeymoon trip to Paris, via the Eurostar rail service. This time, it was only natural that I would choose to drive...

Our destination was the Tuscany region of Italy, with our route taking us along high-speed toll motorways, tree-framed countryside roads, endless bridges and tunnels, and mountain passes eager to deliver a capital sentence upon any driver lacking good judgement or sturdy brakes.

There were many highlights on this big road trip, but two stand tall (one literally) above all others:

  1. Italian drivers: you really are crazy. Truly insane. It is not possible for me to overstate this. I love it! Don't ever, ever change. Watching old Fiat Pandas take a racing line across several lanes of dual carriageway is a memory that I will cherish.
  2. The N85 Route Napoleon is easily the best road I have ever driven. It may be a killer in places, and travel sickness medication may not have much effect there (apologies to my wife, who was a very good sport) but it is a glorious route.

col du mont cenis

The way I went on about the Route Napoleon just now, you would have though I'd feature it first... But there was another spectacular pass that has seared a vivid memory into my cerebral cortex: the Col Du Mont Cenis (N6) at the French/Italian border. Stunning vistas, the bluest sky imaginable, and the crispest air I've ever inhaled. Bon on the way up, buon all the way down!

goodwood festival of speed approaches 30-05-06

goodwood 2005

Yes! Cometh the 7th of July, I will once again take to Lord March's hallowed estate for the greatest display of past, present and future ground-based transportation devices. I look forward to seeing/recording Bugatti Veyrons, Ferarri 599s, Porsche GT3s, Zonda Fs...

I'll be at Goodwood for two days this year, so be prepared to be overwhelmed with photos and video of, well, everything. No need to pay or register or any of that silly nonsense to see what we've got—just visit us over the weekend of 7 July to see the very best of the world of cars and bikes.

choose your own colours! 21-04-06

raadius tomtom go splash screens!

People have said to me they wished they could choose different colours for the Petrolhead Apparel in the Raadius Shop.

Well now you can!

It's now possible to spec up certain pieces of clothing from a selection of different colours and colour combinations to suit your individual taste and sense of style. Happy shopping!

and, as always...

If you think you've got something interesting to contribute to Raadius in general (your own favourite road, a technique you'd like to share, of pictures of an popular motoring event) get in touch and I'll post your content with the same care and fine style in which the rest of the site is presented. What you drive or where you live doesn't matter. If it's good stuff, I want it on this site. You can also leave feedback, information, opinions, stories, pictures and video in the Drivers' Forum.

Thank you for visiting my site, and enjoy every mile.
