novice track day p4

my trackday

My trackday was organised through Motorsport Vision and I found everyone - from the person taking my phone booking to the people serving refreshments - to be friendly, easy-going, and professional. I will book my next day with them again.

My concerns about being slow or having a shunt turned out to be totally unnecessary. The pre-session briefing answers all your questions, and the the overwhelmingly respectful nature of fellow participants, both in and out of the car, makes for a comfortable and fun day.

good wear rates
Despite heavy use, everything left the the circuit in great shape

a few things I learned on the day:

  1. Bring a tyre pressure gauge with you (a foot- or electrically-operated air pump is also a very shrewd investment). Check your tyre pressures at least a couple of times during the day. Being able to check and adjust your tyres' pressures will make a dramatic difference to your car's performance!
  2. Inflate your tyres a minimum of 5psi higher than normal before you start driving. 10 psi will probably be a better amount, but these are just guides. I found that a 10psi increase made a huge difference for me. The car felt sharper and more fun on the track. Just be sure to return your tyres to their normal pressures for the drive home.
  3. Make sure you start your session with plenty of fuel in your tank; it might even be a good idea to use the highest octane fuel you can find. There's no sense losing valuable track time driving away to find the nearest filling station, and higher-octane fuel will likely make a noticeable difference to your engine's performance, as you'll have the throttle wide open all day long!
  4. Take the following with you as a minimum: a tyre pressure gauge; a bottle of water - for thirst or rinsing things; a rag or a paper towel roll for wiping away/checking fluids; some electrical or duct tape, as a precaution to keep your lights from shattering all over the track; a bottle of motor oil for topping up if needed; and finally, some high-energy drinks/snacks to keep you energy levels up - track days are mentally and physically punishing!

The only other thing I might suggest is a basic set of tools, as they could come in very handy!
